Cave Creek Ranch News June 29, 2014

Such a lot to cover since April!  The most noticeable change at the Ranch is the Frog Pond we put in on May 6th.  It’s in front of Creekside Cottage, in the dip in the ground by the old well, the round stone structure with the conical roof.  The pond is 40 feet long, 28… Read more »

Spring 2014 News

A kind email from Ranch guests reminded me that it’s been nearly a year since I last posted here, and it might look like nothing was happening a Cave Creek Ranch.    Many thanks for that reminder (and push!).  We’ve been very busy, and it’s hard to know where to start. We have had help in… Read more »

Summer News

June 11, 2013 How did it get to be June already?  I see our last post was in early March, too long ago! We had a good spring season, with all the usual mammals and birds putting in their appearances.  A highlight for some guests in early May was seeing three mountain lion cubs crossing… Read more »

Spring is arriving with moisture (always the big news here!).  A half inch of rain in the past day, and more snow on the peaks  around us, mean we’ve already had more moisture this year than in the first six months of last year. The cottonwoods are shedding their bud covers, and I’ve even seen… Read more »

Cell Phone Service ! Perfect hiking weather, 60’s during the day, 30’s at night.  Stars have been spectacular, although the moon is beginning to dim them.   For the next two weeks as the moon waxes and wanes back to this point it’s very bright when out walking at night, and you don’t need a flashlight. Birds have been… Read more »

A cold night,  around 5 degrees F, and the water wasn’t working this morning.  Since we had a lamp in the well house and that was still on, we looked further and found the frozen pipe by the pressure tank inside the garage.  A heater and Sheila working a hair dryer quickly defrosted it, but… Read more »

Portal residents and visitors participated in two Christmas Bird Counts December 29 and 30.  The first count was around Portal, and the second was in the nearby Peloncillo Mountains in New Mexico.  It had been a fairly dry fall, so there were few sparrows (sometimes the most abundant group of species), but most of the usual… Read more »

Tuesday December 18, 2012 RAIN!  We had almost an inch of rain on Friday and Saturday (.96 to be exact), making 12.68 for the year so far, with more moisture possible tomorrow.  The higher peaks in the Chiricahuas are white with snow, and we’re hoping this is the beginning of the wet winter promised by… Read more »

A particularly beautiful Fall is ending, and Winter is arriving with many new birds.   The leaves are falling from the cottonwoods, which had been a brilliant yellow until two days ago.  The sycamores are still holding their bronze leaves, quite a contrast to the big white trunks and limbs.  The juniper, hackberry, and pyracantha… Read more »
